The Unspoken Reality of a Southern Swing Shift: When Coworkers Become OT Hogs

As we go about our daily routines, covering for one another at the plant while some of us head to the Dirty Sock in College Station, it's essential to acknowledge the unique challenges that come with working on a southern swing shift. While we might enjoy the flexibility that this schedule provides, there are underlying issues that can have a significant impact on our well-being and job satisfaction.

On long change days, our shift becomes the only one available to provide OT coverage on Sunday nights, Tuesday days, and Thursday nights. This means that we're often required to work extra hours without much notice or flexibility. While having a few colleagues who are willing to put in the extra effort can make things smoother, it's not always possible to rely on them.

Moreover, there's no guarantee that we'll get our full 7-day break. As OT hogs on our shift, we might be able to manage the workload without much issue. However, if others on our team have a different attitude towards OT, it can create tension and stress within the group. Additionally, being forced to work extra hours or having to stay longer than expected due to low manpower and no backup calls can lead to burnout.

Another significant concern is the potential for extended shifts. If someone calls in sick and there's nobody available to cover the shift, we might be stuck working a 16-hour day with only 8 hours off before being called back for another 12 hours. This kind of scheduling can take a toll on our bodies over time, increasing the risk of sleep apnea and other health issues.
